Background: The expansion of nursing knowledge has been noticeable in the last few decades and a lot of valid and effective researches have been done on patient caring methods. However, the results of these researches have not been utilized by clinical nurses, and many nursing interventions are still being done using traditional methods. The aim of this study was to determine the barriers of research utilization as perceived by nurses working in educational hospitals of Khoramabad.
 
Material and Methods: This study was done based on a descriptive cross-sectional design. The samples including 94 RNs were selected by random sampling. The data collection instrument was a two-part questionnaire including the demographic information, and Barriers Scale that included four groups of questions to assess barriers of research utilization as follows: adopter (nurse's awareness and perception), organization, innovation, and communication. The data were analyzed by SPSS software version 11.
 
Findings: The major reported barriers of research utilization included inadequate facilities for implementation (96%), uncooperative managers (91%), insufficient time for implementation (89%), unfamiliarity with research methodology (85%), and lack of competent colleagues to discuss research results (83%).
 
Conclusion: The results of this study revealed that, from the RNs’ points of view, the major perceived barriers were in the realms of organization and inadequacy of nurses’ knowledge about research methodology. Consequently, the allocation of resources for education and implementation of research findings in clinical practice is recommended -e.g. providing nursing staff with diverse models of continuing education. Additionally, establishing special positions for nurses’ researchers in clinical practice is highly suggested.
