Abstract

Objective: In recent years, a greater attention has been paid to mentoring which attributes greater role for nurses in nursing students’ clinical education. This study was aimed to determine and compare the mentorship and traditional method nursing students' attitudes toward the nurses' role in their clinical education.
Method: This descriptive comparative study was conducted in the second semester of the 2012-2013 academic year in Khoramabad's Nursing and Midwifery Faculty. The sample included 40 senior students who enrolled by census sampling method. In the mentioned semester the Faculty performed clinical education for those students in two ways: Mentoring (21participant) and traditional method (19 participant) which means the presence of a full time nursing clinical teacher. Instrument for data collection included a 24 items questionnaire about students’ attitudes to the nurses' role in clinical education in four subscales of students’ personality development, socialization, academic achievement and professionalization. Descriptive statistics, Chi square and Independent t-test was applied for data analysis.
Results: The study groups did not have significant difference in terms of mean and standard deviation scores on attitude to the nurses’ role in clinical education (P= 0.16 )and its subscales: personality development (p= 0.27), socialization (P= 0.29), academic achievement (P= 0.09) and professionalization(P= 0.20).

Conclusions: Nursing student's attitudes toward the nurses’ role in clinical education in mentorship group was not significantly different from those of the students who were trained by the traditional way. Merely clinical experience is not sufficient to choose a mentor and nurses need to be trained and supported by nursing faculties and link faculty members to be succeeded in mentoring role.
