Abstract
Background: Awareness of the graduates’ professional situation seems to be necessary in order to orientate future plans. The aim of this study was to determine the professional status and educational and research activities of the nurses and midwives who had graduated from Nursing and Midwifery Faculty of Lorestan University of Medical Sciences between 1991 to 2005. Material and Methods: Through a cross-sectional descriptive study, 256 questionnaires out of 1000 questionnaires that had been sent by mail to the students graduated from the faculty between 1991 and 2005 were analyzed. The data collection tool was a questionnaire including questions about demographic information, professional situation, job satisfaction, and educational and research activities. The data were analyzed by SPSS software (ver.11) and some descriptive data were obtained. Findings: The results revealed that 75.4% of the subjects were female, mostly between the age range of 20 to 30 (54.3%). Moreover, 85.15% of them had work experience of fewer than ten years, and 96.5% were employed. Other results were as follows: 47.3% had relative income satisfaction, 65.6% saw a relationship between their jobs and majors of study, 57.4% had been employed in the year after the graduation, 52% had an average job satisfaction. 80.5% had membership in the Graduates Club. The most educational and research activities related to their majors, which were reported to be reading professional books and journals (48.8), attending national conferences (46.9%), and participating in educational workshops, seminars and congresses (42.2%). Conclusion: In this study, it was found that most of the subjects had been employed full-time in the first year after their graduation and their jobs were quite connected with their majors of study. Job satisfaction was mediocre among them and they participated in educational and research activities. Therefore, an awareness of the graduates’ professional situation seems to be necessary in order to orientate prospective educational schedules compatible with professional and social needs.
